Progress reports in the WPs

WP1.

The quality control of the 8.7 M synoptic observations is being completed now and the Deliverable 1.5 was submitted last month. URV have extracted 178 M already digitised data from Sweden, Norway and Catalonia (130 M!), which will be used in the spatial consistency check. The digitised and quality-controlled data will be also tested for spatial consistency and Deliverable 1.6 will be done with minimum delay. Then data will be delivered, first, to WP2 partners (Deliverable 1.7) and, second, to the MARS Archive through the ECFS and to ECA&D (Deliverable 1.8). Other global databanks and data repositories, such as ISPD, ZENODO, HadISDH and ISTI databank, will also benefit of the whole recovery and gathering effort made in UERRA. Deliverables 1.7 and 1.8 will be with possible small delays since there will be staff changes. The Romanian data have also been delivered (some 300 k).

KNMI is working on the E-OBS update (D1.13) and the uncertainty estimate will be done by Richard (D1.14) for the end of the year.

WP2.

The Met Office is now running in production and the GRIB2 conversion (almost) correct and archiving is practically ready to start. The 2008 is not run yet but will soon start in a preliminary version not including all the satellite data (but includes ATOVS which is the most important one) and it should be completed before the end of the year.

SMHI has completed the cloud MESAN analysis for 2004-2008 with a well working system and submitted the D2.10. Now, the second cloud mask data set processed by Meteo-Swiss has arrived but it is in a different kind (fraction and not binary cloud mask) and it is not sure if they can do the analysis all the way back to 1983 due to some calibration problems. Maybe somewhere around 1991 is enough but a longer period than at present is needed to at least go closer to the MoU. The HARMONIE is running again and almost all the period up to 2015 done and a re-run of the 2006-10 and also the earlier decades are about half done. It is running well now using Met Office computer allocation. MARS is archived for 2008 and 2006-7 is ongoing. There was a mixup of the cloud water and ice variable for 2008 but it is being corrected.

At UB Lilo is running 2008 but not quite all of it. There have been a lot of effort on the archiving parameters and the height levels were not above ground and this and other issues will be corrected. There will now be the PhD work and then Jan Keller is coming back after New Year.

MF has run the ensembles for 2006-10 but a mistake was found in reading a file needed for SURFEX in the dynamical donwscaling from SMHI so there was no soil water and that caused to warm temperatures. 2008 will be rerun but not other years. The production runs 2006-10 are running now.

WP3

There Deliverable D 3.5 Preliminary assessment has been sent out as a draft for comments. There different methods are described and reanalyses have been evaluated where they have been available so there is not a delay as such. It will be necessary to have an ensemble for the end of the year to actually test the ensemble methods. There is more worry for the Evaluation WS due in September and before that a lot of results have to be computed and reanalyses really ready. We need to really update ourselves (and the GANTT diagram) when we can do it for the evaluation to be done. Likewise Cristian and Francesco are depending on available data. Then after there should be a User friendly report and that should be fairly straight forward to do.

Action: The timing of the Workshop and other UERRA meetings will be discussed at the GA

Action: The production and archiving plan and use by WP3 (and WP4) will be discussed at the GA

WP4

The MARS work at ECMWF is going on very actively now, as written above.

The ESGF system is now working at KNMI and it is ready for UERRA data to be put there. E-OBS data have been put there and we decide on a UERRA data set to be put in there.

Climate indices will be computed from reanalyses when available.

The CIBs work is now preparing a 2016 report with the flooding in Germany in the summer and then there will be another one (?).

WP7

An ETCCDI workshop is now foreseen in Spring 2017 in Botswana (organised by Omar Baddour from WMO/CCl) with UERRA contribution and outreach. There has been no new information about this from WMO but it is to be checked. The Workshop will take place though.

Action: Check on the status of the African WS (Gé)

WP8

No new activities but next year's workshop will need to start planning and if it can be colocated with the the other meetings as well.

WP9

A telephone meeting was held the other week and some of the 5 projects finish this year and they are summed up now. The Lessons learned Deliverable has been submitted.

Brussels review meeting outcome and periodic report

The Periodic Report has now been submitted after information has been delivered from a number of partners clarifying e.g. mission claims where UERRA was not obvioius.

Data production and archiving delays and impact on WP3 and plan

Action: Richard will mail the partners and ask for input to update the GANTT and then we will discuss it at the GA.

Deliverables' status

D 1.5 Dare quality control. It will be delayed by 2-3 months (from M30). Delivered.

D 1.11 Gridding resolution assessments. Due M30 and will be done in July. Delivered.

D 1.12 Gridding resolution enhancements, software package, report. Delivered.

D 1.13 E-OBS updates. Ongoing and will be done before end of year.

D 1.14 Gridding uncertainty estimate. Will be done before end of year.

D 2.3 Ensemble variational DA diagnostics delayed until September. October now, November?

D 2.6 HARMONIE initial production. M30. Diagnostics will be carried out for some of the data and a report written but somewhat delayed. Eo September. Delivered.

D 2.9 MESCAN ensemble. M30. It will be ready in September – now it will be October, now November

D 2.10 MESAN cloud analysis. M24. Delayed some months into or the end of summer. October. Delivered.

D 3.5 Preliminary assessment. October/mid November. Just Delivered.

D 7.9. African Workshop. Delayed but will be done in connection with other activities in the late autumn. Now delayed to spring 2017.

D 9.3 Lessons learned. M24. In process but not all contributions yet. Submitted. Delivered.

Copernicus climate change services, plans

There are now two lots, the Arctic and the Europe CORDEX domain and each with a single DA system. It rules out a multi-model so there may be competing tenders. On the other hand, with single systems, there should be more time for observation related work for the RRAs.

Meetings and communication

REA organised a collocation workshop with the Projects 28-29 September. It was about communicating uncertainties and on the second day more exchanges between the projects and ESA, DG CLIMA etc. The material is on the UERRA web.

GA eo 2016 and Showcase event and Project review meeting(s)

The next GA is 21-23 and the showcase WS 23-24 November so it is all prepared with some finishing touches. There will not be so many external participants to the Showcase event and those who attend are have background knowledge or are meteorologists.

Next year we will anyway have two WSs , one second WP8 and one final WP3 and both oriented towards products and users. (See above and probably together and with the final GA.
